High Falls

This used to be one of the most impressive falls in the area. Unfortunately, all the water is diverted around the falls by Glenville Dam to the powerhouse far downstream.

As part of relicensing its dams with the government, and recreational improvements hard-won by area stakeholders, Duke Power had agreed to let some water over the falls for whitewater kayakers and also build a trail to a put-in at the base of the falls. When I heard this news, I thought we had scored a nice win for waterfallers as well. Unfortunately, the relicensing project was tied up in litigation over the Dillsboro Dam for many years. Although the town of Dillsboro didn't want the dam removed, Duke won the fight, and the dam is now gone.

According to this article on American Whitewater's web site, the license has been issued and as a result, Duke is required to put in the recreational improvements...within 5 years. So although this might not be happening tomorrow, it appears the trail to the falls will eventually be built.

I've heard that property owners in the area allow hikers to visit the falls along the "traditional" route starting off of NC 107, but I haven't confirmed this since I was told by a fellow carrying a pistol it was NOT the case many years ago. I'll have to go back and investigate before recommending a hike here.
